The Fellows of Contemporary Art

Thirty-Five Years of Support for Contemporary Art in California

FOCA is pleased to offer an open call for curatorial submissions for
its Curator’s Laboratory program. We are currently looking for
exhibitions with engaging curatorial concepts that could take place
at FOCA’s Chinatown exhibition space in Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.

The Fellows of Contemporary Art is an independent art organization
that collaborates with the art community at large and nurtures the
expression of creative freedom in support of contemporary California
art and artists. FOCA’s Curator’s Exhibition Awards have provided
funding for forty-five exhibitions, which have exhibited at forty-
seven different venues nationwide. In addition, since beginning in
2006, FOCAFellowships have been directly awarded to six mid-career
California artists.

The latest chapter of our ongoing support for California art and
artists is the Curator’s Laboratory, our ongoing series of
exhibitions at FOCA's Chinatown office (970 North Broadway, Suite
208, in Chinatown). Since its first exhibition in 2007, Stoneface
curated by Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer and Stacy Bengtson Fertig, the work
of 20 emerging to established artists has been featured in five
inspired exhibitions. Each project involves public events and some
form of documentation. More information about Curator’s Lab projects
can be found at www.focala.org/projects.

In conjunction with Catherine “Kitty” Chester’s generous gift
that inspired a renaming of the program, the Kitty Chester Series of
Curator's Laboratory Projects, FOCA is now publicly seeking proposals
for the upcoming season of exhibitions. FOCA’s Curator’s Lab
Committee is looking for exhibitions with a strong curatorial concept
involving California-based artists that could take place during the
following exhibition periods:

September 10, 2009 – November 28, 2009,

December 10, 2009 – February 27, 2010, or

March 11, 2010 – May 28, 2010

All timely submitted proposals will be reviewed by the Committee,
which will select the Curator’s Laboratory Award recipients and
schedule the exhibitions. Group exhibitions are preferred. The term
“curator” is loosely defined and may include artists or writers or
others who conceive of and organize an exhibition.

If you have an exhibition idea that you would like us to consider
please send a proposal which includes the following:

1. A one page narrative expressing your curatorial concept

2. A brief budget that roughly outlines how FOCA’s $1,000
Curator’s Lab Award would be used to support the project.

Additional material providing information about the artists you plan
to involve is also welcome and encouraged.

Supplemental materials will be accepted in the following formats:

● CD containing digital images, i.e. jpeg format

● Photographic prints

Please include the following information with artwork submissions:

● Artist’s first and last name

● Title of work, year executed, media, dimensions
