Call for Visual Artist:

MacArthur
Park Public Art Project

LA Commons develops artistic and cultural
projects that reveal the unique stories of L.A.’s neighborhoods, and engages visitors through
cultural tours. LA Commons is calling for a lead artist to work
with a core youth arts team (age 15-25) and youth mentor artists to collect
neighborhood stories around current neighborhood issues, and to design and create an
installation with the team that will be displayed in the trees of MacArthur Park on West 7th
Street between Alvarado and Lake Street.

Project Partners: LA Commons, CARECEN, Mama’s Hot Tamales, MacArthur
Park Recreation Center, ReDiscover MacArthur Park, Levitt Pavilion MacArthur
Park, MacArthur Park Learning Center, Miguel Contreras Learning Center and the
office of LA City Council Member Ed Reyes.

The Role the Lead Artist/Designer in
this project will be:

To participate in story/image gathering
process with the group to inform the designs for the artwork.
To mentor the core youth arts team to foster
youth in the development of skills in image making and design.
To collaborate with youth artists, youth
mentors and project organizers.
To create the overall design and cohesiveness
for the installation in MacArthur Park.

Timeline

Weekly workshops will
take place on Fridays 4:30-6:30 pm at CARECEN.

Late
March-April 2011 – Workshops begin. Story and image gathering and design

May 5,
2011 – Design completed and presented

May-August,
2011 – Creating art work and
workshops.

August
2011 – Installation. Opening celebration will take place at Youth Talent Night
at Levitt Pavilion.

Artist Qualifications

Experience in art making and design
Experience working with youth and community
Familiarity with MacArthur Park and life of
Central American Immigrants in Los Angeles.

Compensation

$2000 stipend for Lead
