*What is CAPACETE*

CAPACETE, inaugurated in 1998, consists basically of 2 structures. The first, open for a new director, is dedicated to the Research Residency Program, hosting up to 6 residents at a time: 3 in Rio de Janeiro and 3 in São Paulo, which totals around 15 to 20 professionals per year in 3 to 6 month periods. The second structure, opened in 2000, is based in Rio de Janeiro and works as a guest house for different professionals related to contemporary thinking, who can come for different periods of time on their own account. Here, we host around 400 people a year. This structure will remain under the same administration and should continue to collaborate with the new direction.

CAPACETE works and is financed by a network of international institutions and foundations (FONDS BKVB, DCA, OCA, Gasworks, Prince Claus, IASPIS, French Agency at local consulat of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Goethe of São Paulo, Frame, Daniel Langlois Foundation, Goverment of Cyprus, Fundacão Gulbenkian, AECID and recently also Funarte/Ministery of Culture of Brazil), which have made possible a continuous programme of residencies with professionals coming from different nationalities. CAPACETE's activities also include production of new work by the artists and residents, lectures, publications, workshops and exhibitions.

*Of its actual functioning*

1 - The core program of CAPACETE are the research residency programs for visual arts that includes all media;
2 - The program receives 15 to 20 professionals per year; mostly artists, curators and critics;
3 - All partnerships are international;

4 - CAPACETE still does not have a stable partnership with local institutions and goverment, apart from certain specific situations like the 25th, 28th and 29th São Paulo Bienial and the FUNARTE Program in 2010;
5 - CAPACETE receives different professionals from different cultural segments in the hotel-like structure. We can receive up to 20 people at the same time (groups, etc.);
6 - In the last few years, CAPACETE, didn't have its own exhibition space but had moments of public visibility through the collaboration with other organisations (São Paulo Bienial, Festival de Cinema/7 editions, among others).

*Expectations from the new director*

1 - We believe that the residency program should continue to be CAPACETEs core activity. The new direction will give it a new curatorial focus;
2 - The new situation will contemplate an advisory board with some of the members that are already working on this call;
3 - The candidate can be of any nationality;
4 - It is wishfull to broaden the participation of Brazilians and Latin American candidates;
5 - It is of fundamental importance for the new adminstration to mantain the international relationships built up along these years;
6 - That new private and public partnerships in Brazil will grow in importance;
7 - That the mandates for the new direction will be of 3 years with possibilities of extension;
8 - Despite the changes in the direction, the founder Helmut F. Batista will remain an active consultant for the transition that should take place in 2012;
9 - That in the beginning of 2013, after the transition year, the new director should have gained autonomy for his curatorial program and will define the new guidelines with the members of the board.

*What is desired from the new director*

1 - That she or he has prior experiences in residency programs or in the production of projects that take long terms participation of professionals into account;
2 - That, if a foreigner, he or she speaks English and should have notions of Spanish and/or Portuguese;
3 - That she or he should be able to participate actively in 2012, the transition year, in order to build up the agenda for 2013 and onwards;
4 - That she or he should be constantly engaged in mantaining institutional relationships;
5 - That she or he should be able to spend longer periods or even the whole of 2012 in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo at CAPACETE;
6 - That she or he keeps the board informed of all administration and changes;
7 - That she or he keeps an active communication with the local art scene;
8 - That the new director is a natural born host;
9 - That she or he should function as a guide and interlocutor for the residents and should facilitate the exchange of experience among the professionals in residency and the local art context.

*Of the selection process*

1 - The comission, listed below, will make its evaluation;
2 - A small pre-selection will be interviewed through skype;
3 - Possible candidates will be invited, if the comission thinks it is necessary, to come to Rio de Janeiro and or São Paulo for a personal interview so that she or he gets to know the CAPACETE structure from within (1 week). The transport cost should be divided in 50% between the finalists and CAPACETE. CAPACETE will take all cost for hosting in Brazil.

*Of the payment of the new director*

1 - CAPACETE has functioned with multiple supports from different international institutions (FONDS BKVB, DCA, OCA, Gasworks, Prince Claus, IASPIS, French Agency at local consulat of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Goethe of São Paulo, Frame, Fundacão Daniel Langlois, Goverment of Cyprus, Fundacão Gulbenkian, AECID and recently also Funarte) that makes it possible for the residency program to have a continious outcome. Occasional collaborations like the Festival de Cinema do Rio (7 consecutives editions) or the 25th, 28th and 29th São Paulo Biennial in 2002, 2008 e 2010 respectively has made many other projects possible. It is important to highligt that CAPACETE is a non-profit organisation and that its income, until today, was only sufficient to mantain its core activities going. It will be part of the challenges of the new director to organise strategies to gain sustainability for the future of CAPACETE;

2 - At this very moment we do not have a precise answer towards the question of a salary for the new director. Nevertheless we stress that the actual direction is working hard to come up with a solution and that porposals that take that challenge as part of its strategies will be taken very much into account by the comssion;

3 - It is understood that the new director should reside either in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and travel between the two.
