Nes Art Residency is pleased to announce that there is space available for the spring and autumn in the residency in Skagastrond Iceland.

Nes
Nes artist residency was founded in the beginning of March 2008 in the town of Skagastrőnd and the first artists arrived in June.

As an international artist residency, Nes provides artists with a workspace and living quarters during their stay in Skagastrőnd. The town was a trading and fishing town for centuries. With the fishing industry decreasing in the last decade, the former fishing plant at Fjőrubraut 8 has now found a new role housing the Nes artist residency studios.

The living quarters are in apartment houses and row-houses, each shared by 2-5 artists.

Main Goals
The main goal of the residency is to provide an opportunity for international exchange, where professional artists in all media including writers and performing artists are given the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and possibly collaborate.

Would you like to interact with the community?
There are many opportunities to interact with the community of Skagastrőnd. The art teacher at the grade school has been working with artists from Nes. She has been bringing her classes to the studio for art talks. This is a wonderful event for both the kids and the artists and we hope you will participate.

About the town
Skagastrőnd 'Peninsula-Beach' is the hometown of Nes artist residency.

It is a small village of 508 inhabitants in rural Iceland. The town is located in the Northwest of Iceland, about a three hour drive from Reykjavík.

The town, although small, has all the main services that a visitor might need including a bank, library, post office, gas station, gym, pharmacy, grocery store, one restaurant, with an addition of a café and swimming pool open in the summer.

To Icelanders, Skagastrőnd is better known as the hometown of Hallbjőrn Hjartarson 'The Icelandic Cowboy' and 'Country King.' He has promoted American Country music as well as his own Icelandic country songs for decades on his private radio station on the second floor of 'Kántríbær' the Country bar and restaurant in town.

In the vicinity of the town there is a challenging nine hole golf course.

Fishing in nearby lakes and rivers is a popular activity for locals and tourists. Please note that if you want to bring your own fishing pole it has to be new (still in sealed plastic) or proven disinfected or will otherwise be confiscated at customs. This is to protect against diseases.

The community of Skagastrőnd hopes that Nes artist residency will generate a melting pot of ideas and inspiration in all fields, as well as create an atmosphere of cooperation between the artists and inhabitants of the town.
