Box Populi: The Art of the Protest
October 1, 2012-November 16,2012

Box Populi: The Art of the Protest plays with the phrase Vox Populi,
which means Òvoice of the people.Ó In this spirit, (u)ntitled: The
Wignall Museum Curatorial Club would like to invite you to participate
in an exhibition open to anyone using the most basic materials -
cardboard and text. Cardboard protest signs have been photographed and
shared through the news and social media websites such as Facebook and
Tumbler and their messages have become part of the popular culture.
Protest signs are portable, disposable, and frequently replicated.
Rather then being owned these signs articulate the undercurrents of the
cultural, economic and social movements of our time. They exemplify the
idea that Òthe personal is politicalÓ, the notion that personal
revelation can be a political tool. If one includes the modern notion
that art is ideas and meanings, and not just form, then these signs
become art.

Box Populi asks students and community members to anonymously share the
message they would communicate if they had their own cardboard sign.
What would your sign say? Would you plea for help, make a statement,
divulge a secret, or give your best pithy punchline? Whatever it is, we
would like your submission.

All submissions will be accepted as long as they follow the following
guidelines:
We are looking for hand painted or hand printed work. Examples of good
mediums would be cardboard, poster board, thick paper, and cloth
banners. Pencil, paper, markers, paint, crayons, sharpie, and pen are
all acceptable media. The sign should be 30x30 or smaller and the
artwork should be suitable to be hung in a public exhibition space.
Artwork must be ready to hang if you do not want holes in it. We reserve
the right to withdraw obscene artwork due to the public nature of the
CAA Student Gallery.
