Son of Semele seeks part-time Theater Technical Director

*POSITION TITLE:* Theater Technical Director

*REPORTS TO:* Producing Artistic Director

*ORGANIZATION:* *Son of Semele Ensemble (SOSE)* is an award-winning
ensemble theatre company that operates the 36-seat Son of Semele Studio,
located in History Filipinotown. SOSE produces 2 to 3 productions per year,
an annual repertory festival of devised work and hosts 2-4 guest
productions per year. Throughout the year SOSE develops our own
company-devised work. SOSE is a progressive Los Angeles theatre company
using an expansive and cross-disciplinary style that employs dynamic visual
elements including video projections, heightened physicality and dance.
SOSE has received two LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards (seven total
nominations), four LA Weekly Theatre Awards (six total nominations) and an
NAACP Theatre Award (four total nominations). We have been featured in
TheatreForum (an international theatre journal) and a profile by LA Weekly
for the “Why Theatre Matters” issue.

*JOB OPPORTUNITY:* SOSE is looking for a new part-time technical director
to facilitate technical aspects of production, maintain SOSE’s equipment
and venue, and coordinate the technical complexities of stacked-production
and sharing of the facility.

*PRIMARY FUNCTION:* We are looking to hire a part-time, hands-on Technical
Director to coordinate the production elements of our programming. The
Technical Director is responsible for making sure that all technical
aspects of a show are carried out in a timely fashion. This includes
coordinating the set design, lighting and set construction, and handling
technical details in preparation for performances. The main tasks are
facilitating and leading work crews, making economical use of budgets and
unskilled labor, and maintaining and upgrading the venue for safety and
efficiency. The TD will also schedule meetings and coordinate the
joint-usage of stacked events, as well as repair, maintain and upgrade
technical equipment as-needed. The ideal candidate would have a BA in
theater (or greater), be familiar with all aspects of stagecraft, fluent in
reading scenic plans and lighting plots, and competent in rigging and
operating the theater's sound and lighting boards, the dimming and audio
systems.

*AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:*
1. Oversee the production aspects of Son of Semele Theater.

2. In lighting, be able to read a plot, hard and soft patch as-needed,
program and operate the PC software “LightFactory” and train guest users to
use equipment safely and effectively.

3. Maintaining equipment & hardware inventory including lighting fixtures,
dimmers, computers and power tools.

4. Maintain technical budget with Producing Artistic Director and work with
hired designers to realize design vision.

*SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:* Hiring and supervision of set and light
crews for load-ins and strikes (in-house & co-productions). Leading crews
with size ranging from 1-8 volunteers. Interface between management and
crew. TD will be in charge of managing safety and creating and maintaining
a safe working environment for all technical work.

*EDUCATION:*

*Essential*: BA, with experience.

*Desirable*: BFA in Design/ Production/Technical aspects of Theater, plus
2-3 years of experience in theater.

*EXPERIENCE:*

*Essential*: Two or more years experience in theatrical production.

*Desirable*: Three years school and/or professional training and three to
five years of theatrical production experience. Interest & passion for
production theater and a desire for a career in the theater arts.

*KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:* Excellent technical abilities in planning,
construction, materials, and techniques. Welding, a plus. Strong
communication, attention to details and organizational skills. Creative
problem-solver.

*PHYSICAL DEMANDS:* Highly physical work, including frequent lifting
(occasional lifting up to 50-75 pounds), constructing, reaching, bending,
twisting. Physical endurance is a plus. Ability to work at heights up to 13
ft.

*WORKING ENVIRONMENT:* Theatre stage space that is 18’ x 18’ with a grid at
13’. There is no shop - all construction is on-site.

*Work Schedule:*
Term: Part-time, year long position.
Start date: October 1st, 2012
Shift: Weekly schedule may include evening and weekend hours; schedule will
vary dependent on special events/productions. Willingness to work with a
varying schedule. Vehicle a plus.
