About

At the end of the 19th Century, French poet Pierre Louys captured the imaginations and the libidos of the literary world with his translations of an extensive, unearthed cache of exquisite and sensuous poems by an ancient Greek courtesan named "Bilitis", a supposed contemporary and friend of Sappho.

For over a decade, her story unfolded and the phenomenon grew, as the Songs of Bilitis entered the canon of classical Greek erotic literature. Although eventually exposed as an elaborate fraud, these remarkable poems remain in print and widely read to the present day.

In this original work originally commissioned by the Getty Villa Theater Lab, the Rogues explore how a flamboyant avant-garde Parisian novelist successfully impersonated a Sapphic Greek poet in one of the great literary hoaxes of all time.

This sensual, voyeuristic original drama will contain moments of full nudity and simulated sex acts, including depictions of orgies. Certain costume changes will require getting dressed and undressed in plain view of an audience. Every actor, if cast, can expect to be nude at some point.

Songs of Bilitis will open at South Coast Repertory for a 1-weekend run in mid February with a second run immediately following for a 5-6 week engagement in at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles.
