MA degree opportunities: Los Angeles area

Greetings!

I am pleased to let you know about the MA in Arts and Humanities program here at California State University Dominguez Hills. The Masters in Arts and Humanities (previously called the Humanities MA) is an exciting 30 unit degree, with a new option of Comprehensive Exams (or Thesis if the GPA is 3.75 or above) as the Culminating Experience.

The degree is interdisciplinary and cross-cultural, with training in film, art, music, philosophy, literature, and history. There is no other program like it in the LA area.

The program is unified by the theme of the city—the urban experience across time and cultures, from ancient Greece to postmodern Tokyo. Our faculty are international and published in their fields.

Seminars are held once a week at night.

Spring 2012 we offered the exciting new Seminar in Film, which examines how cities are depicted in the cinema around the world. It includes films from Hong Kong, Israel, Europe, the US, and Japan.

We are working to develop several new subject options, including music, so let me know if you might be interested in any of these.

Our degree has offered excellent career opportunities. Many of our students are teachers or planning to become teachers, especially at the community college level. We have a number of graduates who have been able to compete very well in the competitive LA market for community college teaching positions. Others have jobs in arts administration or may be creators of various sorts, and others have office jobs of various kinds.

Many employers prefer an Arts and Humanities degree because it helps to create a well-rounded person who can understand people and different cultures sensitively. Some students take this program for personal enrichment. Others take it for professional advancement, as a key stepping stone in their career.

I would be happy to discuss this further. Please feel free to email me so we can discuss more details of the degree.

If you plan to join the program Fall 2013, you should apply as soon as possible while there are still places available. We are still accepting for F 2013. The first step is the on-line Mentor application at the CSUDH home page. http://www3.csudh.edu/student-affairs/ois/graduate-students/ Then, submit the attached supplemental application to me.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Best regards,

Professor Fitzsimmons
