Description:
This is an opportunity open to artists, curators and academics from the whole world who wish to explore their practice in a vibrant and challenging new context; meet new people, materials and experience first hand what it is like to live and work in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Inspired by a sense of simplicity and the desire to collaborate with Rio's cultural landscape, Barracao Maravilha is a revered independent studio and gallery space where horizons meet and pivotal moments are shared between artists and the public.

This residency is aimed at autonomous professionals who wish to expand their knowledge and challenge their practice on an international level. Individuals who wish to immerse themselves in the fabric of the city, produce and present new work. The program offers a professional mentor active in the contemporary art scene such as a renowned artist or curator. The mentor will follow the artist-in-residence's progress with a view to help them realize a public presentation of the work carried out during the residency which can be in the format of a text, exhibition, talk or workshop.

In 2011 Barracao Maravilha's studio expanded over the entire building and began to invite other artists to work in the space, professionals specializing in visual arts production. The organization also has an extensive portfolio of large cultural projects management for public and private clients such as the Museum of Modern Art in Rio, the World Wildlife Fund, OESTUDIO, Fundacão Cultural Palmares and Western Cape Government.

Facilties:
The studio is composed of two large open-plan rooms over two floors, and a ground floor gallery space opening out onto the main avenue. The working spaces are flexible to accommodate each artist according to their needs in each individual project. Well lit and ventilated, the studio is appropriate for a varied production and also has wi-fi internet available throughout the building. Our associate artists work in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, new-technologies, performance and public interventions. The gallery space is available to the artist-in-residence if they have specified this in their residency proposal.

Accommodation:
The Residency program provides the artist-in-residence with an exclusive open-plan loft style flat - located close to the studio above an antique shop and decorated with Brazilian artefacts and antiques throughout. The flat will be shared between up to two artists selected for the program each month. It has wi-fi internet connection and a well equipped kitchen and bathroom.

Location:
Situated in the cultural corridor of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Barracao Maravilha is ideally located for easy access to the principal cultural hubs Rio has to offer, and just down the street you will find the commercial centre.
