Dear Friends,
HOWL Arts, Inc. is looking for a brilliant graphic designer to create an
identity for its new Gallery and Performance Space, HOWL Happening, that
opens in early spring on First Street in the East Village. Inspired by the
late, great poet philosopher, ALLEN GINSBERG, for more than a decade, HOWL!
Festival has been an annual community event celebrating the past and future
of the Lower East Side. The new gallery extends the spirit of the Festival.
“What is a Happening? A game, an adventure, a number of activities engaged
in by participants for the sake of playing.” —artist Alan Kaprow
HOWL Happening takes its name from the unpredictable, FREEFORM Happenings of
the 60s and 70s where active participation of the audience blurred the
boundary between the artwork and the viewer. HOWL Happening will curate
exhibitions and stage LIVE events that combine elements of painting, poetry,
music, dance, vaudeville, and theater—a cultural stew that defies easy
definition.
We are looking for a visionary designer to create our brand and to grow and
extend that identity to all marketing platforms. Qualifications include at
least five years experience working with clients, with extensive experience
in graphic design and the construction of websites a must; the ability to
work as a team player with artists and other creative individuals to distill
a unified vision; an understanding of cutting edge web technologies, social
networking, and other marketing and public relations platforms; experience
with identity programs, blogs, print ad campaigns, books and catalogues, and
marketing collateral such as posters, brochures, and product design like
t-shirts. Understanding of HOWL’s mission and the cultural and social roots
of the organization and the Lower East Side are a plus.
Time is of the essence. We would like to hire a designer by late January and
have a placeholder homepage up by February. Top priority is the branded
website that we would like to go live at the time of our first show (early
March). If this project and time frame seems like a good fit, please send
the following: Links to your website and/or examples of your work; an idea
of how you charge for your services; an estimate of your range of fees; and
anything else you would like us to know about your work and experience
relative to our project.
Please contact HOWL’s marketing consultant Susan
Martin susan@martinmpr.com and copy the HOWL Board members Jane
Friedman aireps@aol.com, Chi Chi Valenti chichi@jackiefactory.com, and
Hattie Hathaway hattiehathaway@yahoo.com.
We look forward to hearing from you,
Susan
