Call for Public Artists
Request for Qualifications (RFQ)
Deadline: Saturday, April 4, 2015

Barnard Foothill, I, LLC, a private developer is seeking artists and/or artist teams interested in creating permanent public art for two projects on the exterior of a private development in the City of Pasadena. One project is in conjunction with the City of Pasadena's 1% for Art mandate on new development. The second project is working solely with the private developer, on an existing building, and is not associated with the City of Pasadena mandate.

CRITERIA
Artists and/or artist teams submitting qualifications should demonstrate a level of experience and professionalism that is commensurate with the project scope and budget. Team applications should demonstrate the qualifications of its individual team members, as well as their qualifications to work together on projects.

ELIGIBILITY
This RFQ is open to all professional artists and/or artist teams working or living in Los Angeles County and working in any medium, style or technique, including, but not limited to: murals, mosaics, ceramics, glass treatments, paints, stencils, and sculptural elements.

SELECTION PROCESS
A selection panel will review applications received in response to this RFQ. The panel will be comprised of the developer, the project architect, and the art consultant.

Artwork will be selected on the basis of creativity, artistic merit, technical proficiency, and relationship to the site. Long-term maintenance, durability, and public safety concerns will be major selection criteria.

One or more artists/artist teams may be chosen to develop an Art Concept proposal for each project. Selected artists will receive $1,000 to develop the Art Concept for the City mandated public art project, and $500 to develop an Art Concept for the mural (off Craig Street).

PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS

Project 1 STORBOX - Phase 3 (City of Pasadena)
STORBOX is a locally owned and operated storage and wine storage facility at 2233 E. Foothill Boulevard in Pasadena.

The public art component for this project is designated for the new 46,300 square foot, 3-story expansion of an existing site at 2233 E. Foothill Blvd, with a 10,000 sq. ft. footprint and two basement levels. The proposed artwork is potentially designated for the south and southerly portion of the west elevation of the building, facing Foothill Blvd. (See attached site plan and architect drawing). Artwork could include window treatments, works or treatments located in the window display, located at the southwest corner, landscaping and/or the actual wall surface. The developer and the City seek to commission a high-quality, original artwork that enhances the site and contributes a unique artwork to the City of Pasadena's Public Art Collection and is durable as well as easy to install and to maintain.

A budget of $60,000 has been allocated for this project. This sum is inclusive of all artist(s) fees, insurance, fabrication, installation, travel, and all other project related expenses.

Project 2 STORBOX - Existing
The public art component for the existing building is designated as a mural project on a building wall off of Craig Ave. (See attached site plan and image). The developer seeks to commission a high-quality, original artwork that enhances the site.

A budget of $15,000 has been allocated for this project. This sum is inclusive of all artist(s) fees, insurance, fabrication, installation, travel, and all other project related expenses.

Incomplete and late applications may be deemed ineligible and not be considered.

The complete application must include the following:

Submit the following information as a single document (PDF or Doc.); each section should begin on its own page:

-Title your document: Last Name, First Name; i.e. Smith_Jane_Info
-Artist Statement of Interest: This may include related experience, artistic ambitions and/or a description of your vision for the site. (One page maximum).
-Resume or Bio (Two-page maximum); teams must submit a resume/bio for each artist on the team
-Image Identification Sheet: These must correspond to the numbers of your submitted images. List your images as: Title. Year. Materials. Dimensions. Location (ifapplicable). Project Budget (if applicable). Brief Description for each artwork
-Images: Submit ten (10) digital work samples of your artwork. Images should be labeled as last name, first name, and number, i.e. Smith_Jane_01. Images should be saved in JPG format only at 72 dpi and 2 MB max per file
