The Universalmuseum Joanneum GmbH is looking for a Head of the Kunsthaus Graz from July 1, 2016, limited to 3 years with the option of an extension for a further two years.

With around 4.5 million collection objects and some 420 permanent employees, the Universal Joanneum is the most important scientific-cultural institution of the Province of Styria and the largest universal museum in Central Europe.

The Kunsthaus Graz—a joint enterprise of the Province of Styria and the City of Graz as part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum—is an exhibition location for international contemporary art, showing international trends in regular, changing exhibitions, placing these developments in both a national and regional context. Committed to the freedom of art, independent in its programming, and discursive, the Kunsthaus Graz is open to everyone in a diverse, changing society.

For the position of Head of the Kunsthaus Graz, we are looking for a high-profile personality from the world of art and culture who will tackle the following tasks in accordance with the mission of the Kunsthaus Graz:
You will carry out the cultural-political mission of the Kunsthaus Graz in the exciting space where international challenges and regional responsibility overlap. Your essential task, besides devising and realising exhibitions and events, is to nurture and develop relations with other international and regional cultural institutions. Together with our curators, and with the support of the experienced team at the Kunsthaus Graz, you will represent this institution in the public realm. Your goal will be to position the Kunsthaus Graz in both the international and local context by means of exhibitions of unusual pulling power, and generally to enhance the attractiveness of the institution for visitors.

Further responsibilities include:
–Strategic development of the artistic programme, as well as the realisation of lasting, modern and complex modes of presentation and education
–Ensuring the firm positioning of the Kunsthaus Graz, both internationally and regionally
–Active exchange and agreement with the other museum departments of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, especially the Neue Galerie Graz as well as the Art in Exterior Space Department
–Optimal usage of synergies with regard to contents, communication and diverse target groups, as well as other international, national and local art institutions
–Together with the qualified team of the Kunsthaus Graz: Conception and realisation of the exhibition programme as well as the accompanying publications
–Together with the qualified team of the Kunsthaus Graz: Awareness of all responsibilities, both substantively and artistically, as well as representation of the Kunsthaus Graz towards the public, the media and the public domain
–Expansion and further development of the network of partner institutions, artists and curators, in order to ensure the successful realisation of artistic and other forms of cooperation
–Attracting additional financial support by means of nurturing and expanding contacts with public funding bodies and private sponsors
–Definition and planning of strategic and operative goals of the museum department of Kunsthaus Graz
–Expert guidance and motivational support of Kunsthaus Graz employees

Your contribution:
–Proven expertise in contemporary fine arts, including media art, and high acceptance within the progressive art community, both international and national
–Excellent ability to communicate and transmit contemporary fine art, including media art
–Profound experience in the conception, planning and conveying of major exhibition projects
–Many years of experience in leading teams
–Excellent contacts to international and national artists, exhibition centres, museums, collections, galleries, event managers, art institutions and sponsors, as well as the media
–Well-versed in dealing with international and national media representatives
–High communication and team-building skills both within and outside of the institution
