Museum Teacher Internship Details

The Museum Student Teacher Intern will teach museum programming and assist with important educational outreach initiatives. Working alongside the Autry’s museum teachers, the intern will receive real-world experience interacting with and leading museum education programs for visiting school and summer groups. The intern will also assist the planning and operation of the Autry’s “Wednesday are West Days”, a series of weekly family activity days held throughout the summer.

The Intern will support two important projects, The 3nd Annual Autry Teacher Academy and the Autry Classroom Curators outreach program. Both programs are fundamental components to the Autry’s Strategic Educational Outreach Initiative what was adopted in 2012. This initiative seeks to serve the long-term needs of students and teachers through developing long-term partnerships with schools that facilitate sequential museum learning opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students. In three years, this collection of partnerships has grown to include more than 50 schools across Southern California. The Autry Teaching Academy is a week-long professional development intensive that trains up to 15 teachers on how to integrate object- and project-based learning into classroom curriculums, and facilitates implementation and understanding of Common Core curriculum and the College, Career and Civic Life educational framework. Participating teachers return to their schools and hold their own professional development workshops to share their knowledge with their colleagues. The Autry Classroom Curators program empowers individual classrooms of students (grades 6-12) to research and curate their own project, which can culminate as an exhibition at the Autry or in their school, or a film, play, or other cultural presentation. The intern will support the Autry Classroom Curators program by conducting content research to help inform upcoming projects.

Duties will include:

· Assisting and leading hands-on activities for visiting school groups and summer camps

· Planning and assisting “Wednesdays are West Days” family activities

· Assisting preparation and operation of the Autry Teacher Academy

· Conducting content research to facilitate upcoming Autry Classroom Curator projects

Candidates must possess a deep commitment to creative forms of teaching and student engagement. Prior experience in teaching educational programs in a museum or other informal educational environment is also preferred. The Museum Student Teaching Intern will be supervised by Carolina Zataray, Senior Coordinator for Outreach and Offsite Teaching.

The Intern will be provided with a desk, telephone, and computer with internet access.
