City of West Hollywood through WeHo Arts is seeking self-nominations for City Poet

As part of its poet laureate program,the City of West Hollywood iscurrently accepting nominations from qualified applicants for its next City Poet. The poet selected for this distinction willhold the position from October 2016 –October 2018, following a two-year term served by inaugural City of WestHollywood City Poet Steven Reigns. The CityPoet serves as the official ambassador of West Hollywood’s vibrant literaryculture, leading the promotion of poetry in the city, including the annualcelebration of National Poetry Month. Interestedpoets are asked to self-nominate by Thursday,July 14, 2016 no later than 12 p.m.; applications may be submitted here: https://form.jotform.com/60328187326962. The CityPoet serves as the official ambassador of West Hollywood’s vibrant literaryculture, generating excitement about the written word, and leading thepromotion of poetry in the city, including the annual celebration of National Poetry Month each April. During the two year term, the City Poet will also create a new body of work that commemorates thediversity and dynamism of West Hollywood. The City Poet program is sponsored by the City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission/WeHo Arts, and the interagency West Hollywood Library Cultural ProgrammingCommittee. Candidates wishing to apply shoulddemonstrate excellence in artistic work and notable public recognition of such,as well as have significant ties to the WestHollywood community, and reside in LosAngeles County. The positionincludes a yearly honorarium, andthe West Hollywood City Poet will beexpected to:

- Enhance the presence and appreciation of poetry andthe literary arts in West Hollywood;
- Each year, create an original poem celebrating WestHollywood
- Contribute to the annual West Hollywood NationalPoetry Month program by selecting poets to be honored on street pole banners
- Organize a yearly panel discussion/reading/writingworkshop as part of the City’s “WeHo Reads” program
- Present two additional writing workshops or poetryreadings which would be presented at a West Hollywood school, the WestHollywood Library, a City Council Meeting, or another City sponsored event suchas the Russian Cultural Festival, One City One Pride, Women's History Month,Disabilities Awareness Month, Black History Month, or any of the numerous otherevents that take place in the City each year. These programs would bepre-approved by Arts and Economic Development Staff.
