Reporting to the Director of Public Programs & Public Engagement and working within the Whitney’s Education Department, the Coordinator of Public Programs & Public Engagement will work on all aspects of public programs, including artist-created events, lectures and conversations, gallery talks, and symposia. The position is responsible for managing the Whitney’s seasonal course offerings, multi-week programs that offer a unique and in-depth approach to museum education. The Coordinator will oversee all aspects of program logistics and coordination with colleagues across the Museum; contribute to ongoing development of programming that articulates the Whitney Museum’s identity as the artist’s museum and furthers the Museum’s mission of bringing artists and publics together, helping to build public engagement through programs that take an experimental approach to museum education and connecting the Museum’s program to audiences and ideas beyond the Whitney’s building. The ideal candidate will demonstrate outstanding organizational skills and a keen understanding of event production, as well as a passion for contemporary art and a familiarity with both emerging and established artists, writers, scholars, and other key voices in contemporary and modern art, politics, and culture. Responsibilities: - Coordinating all aspects of program planning, administration and implementation, including program scheduling, promotion and documentation, and supervising interns - Managing and expanding multi-session courses for adult audiences that offer in-depth views into current exhibitions and the Whitney’s permanent collection, as well as timely assessments of current issues in contemporary art - Managing the Public Programs budget, including projecting, updating and reconciling expenses for all Public Programs and Courses and projecting and tracking Public Programs revenue - Supporting the Director of Public Programs & Public Engagement in the development and planning of a dynamic roster of programs in dialogue with current exhibitions and the Whitney’s permanent collection - Collaborating with artists and colleagues across the Museum, particularly in the coordination of large-scale, Museum-wide initiatives - Coordinating both large- and small-scale events for audiences to learn in experiential ways and exploring opportunities to create programs with a focus on objects in a variety of spaces in the Whitney’s new building – the lobby, indoor and outdoor galleries, the Museum’s public plaza and nearby street - Helping to produce programs that convene specialized audiences of artists, scholars, graduate students, and critics and develop relationships with academic institutions and other arts organizations across New York City and beyond Job requirements: - M.A. with a background in art history or related field and knowledge of contemporary and modern art and artists; - 2-3 years of experience producing public events or museum programs; - Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail; - Strong research, writing, and communication skills; - Demonstrated interest in museum education; - Flexible and collaborative personality; supervisory experience; budgeting, billing, and recordkeeping experience; computer and database proficiency required; MS Office; ability to work evening hours and some weekends for events required.
