JOB OPENING: MEDIA EDUCATOR FOR COMMUNITY PRODUCERS PROGRAM

The Maysles Documentary Center is dedicated to the production and exhibition of documentary films that inspire dialogue and action. Our film education programs are designed with the belief that storytelling is key to people understanding their own lives, being able to connect to others, and engaging their individual and collective power to write urgent and untold stories.

We seek a dynamic and experienced Media Educator for our Community Producers Program.

MEDIA EDUCATOR JOB SUMMARY

The Media Educator for our Community Producers Program will codesign and cofacilitate a sixteenweek documentary production program for youth, ages 18 24, who have been involved in the criminal justice system. Participants will learn the power of telling their own stories, discover new ways to engage with their peers and community, and receive training to prepare them for continued education and employment. This program centers the power of storytelling for personal and community transformation.

The Community Producers Program runs April 2018 – September 2018, meeting twice a week (Mondays & Thursdays) for 3 hours each session. The Media Educator would begin immediately with professional development trainings and curriculum design. This is a parttime position,

1520 hours/per week. Competitive salary.

MEDIA EDUCATOR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaboratively design and cofacilitate a sixteenweek curriculum for young adults that

covers concepts and approaches to documentary filmmaking; innovative storytelling;

self and community; gender and identity; and camera and editing techniques

Create meaningful learning opportunities in an interactive environment and proactively

support empowerment of participants in their growth as individuals, community

members, and changemakers

Work with our Caseworker to ensure youth are receiving social service supports, as

needed

Connect participants to a broader network of film, juvenile justice, and community

building initiatives through field trips, guest speakers and exchanges

Foster relationshipbuilding with participants via phone checkin’s and MDC social media

platforms

Participate in supervisory and staff meetings as needed including professional

development trainings, youth checkins, and program assessments

MEDIA EDUCATOR QUALIFICATIONS

Must have experience teaching documentary film/video in community setting

Demonstrated commitment to holistic youth development and supporting the voices of

youth, especially those impacted by the justice system

Technical proficiency with HD cameras and Final Cut Pro 7 software

Solid interpersonal, communication and organizational skills

Strong belief in the arts as an empowering educational tool

Experience with Motivational Interviewing, Restorative Justice, Social Work, or Spanish

language skills, a plus

SALARY

Media Educators are compensated at competitive rates. Salary is commensurate with

experience.

START DATE

Immediately. Program workshops run April September 2018.

We seek a passionate and detailoriented Program Assistant for our Community Producers Program.

PROGRAM ASSISTANT JOB SUMMARY

The Program Assistant will provide direct support to our Community Producers Program, a sixteen week, handson documentary production program for justiceinvolved youth, ages 18 24. Participants in the Community Producers Program will work in small teams to produce short documentaries on stories important to them and their communities. This program centers the power of storytelling for personal and community transformation.

The Community Producers Program runs April 2018 – September 2018, meeting twice a week (Mondays & Thursdays) for 3 hours each session. The Program Assistant will be working closely with two Media Educators on Mondays and Thursdays, and also spearhead administrative duties on another day during the week. This is a parttime position, 20 hours/per week at $20/hr.

PROGRAM ASSISTANT KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Support Community Producers participants with digitizing and media management for

their short documentary projects

Work with Media Educators to support participants on their films as needed including

production shoots and editing lab days

Maintain organization and signout system of camera and audio equipment for

Community Producers Program

Manage attendance log, petty cash, food, and invoicing for Community Producers

program

Assist Education Director with administrative duties including creating flyers for

program outreach and coordinating program showcase

Contribute to social media communications on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter

PROGRAM ASSISTANT QUALIFICATIONS

Passionate about documentary filmmaking and innovative arts education

Demonstrated commitment to holistic youth development and supporting the voices of

youth of color, immigrant and justiceinvolved young people

Technical proficiency in HD camera and audio recording; Final Cut Pro and/or Adobe

Premiere; and Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator

Solid interpersonal, communication, writing, and organizational skills

Ability to selfmanage and complete tasks independently

Experience with social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Flickr,

Vimeo

SALARY

Program Assistant is paid $20/hr for 20 hours a week.
