Job Type: Full-time. Evening and weekend hours required.

Salary: $30,000/year

OVERVIEW

SPACES is the resource and public forum for artists who explore and experiment. In 2017 we threw open the doors to our new home in a highly visible and easily accessible location in the Hingetown area of Ohio City, where we serve more artists and audience members than ever before.

SPACES is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization with an annual operating budget of $500,000. The staff includes 5 full-time employees, 1 part-time employee, 4 contracted employees, and numerous interns and volunteers who provide ongoing support throughout the year. A 23-member Board of Directors is active and engaged, reflecting a diverse range of expertise and perspectives.

POSITION SUMMARY

SPACES seeks an outgoing, dynamic, innovative Project Coordinator to be part of the Programming department, which oversees 13 newly commissioned artist projects and over 50 public events (on- and off-site) annually. Duties include—but are not limited to—liaising with participating artists and cultural producers, providing exhibition-related administrative support, managing exhibition production and complex installation components; and being an advocate for SPACES and its participating artists.

The Project Coordinator represents SPACES locally, nationally and internationally and reports directly to the Executive Director.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

PROGRAMMING

o Coordinate projects by cultural producers participating in our quarterly residencies and exhibitions, including managing travel accommodations and Visa arrangements; showing artists around town; developing community support for the artists and their work; and assisting with artwork fabrication, installation, and shipping.

o Manage expenses and revenue tracking for project budgets.

o Organize annual open call for applications; process and coordinate panel review of applications.

o Serve as staff co-liaison for Programming Strategy Committee of the Board of Directors.

o Write press releases and facilitate publications by collecting and copyediting information.

o Lead tours and give lectures about SPACES and its artists.

o Coordinate interns, work-study students and volunteers in assisting with artists’ projects.

o Work with Community Engagement Manager to develop outreach opportunities.

o Create & implement artist professional development events.

DEVELOPMENT

o Assist SPACES Deputy Director with project-based fundraising efforts by compiling data, and providing written materials and video/images for grants and reports.

o Assist with budget preparation and financial reporting.

o Help coordinate Monster Drawing Rally and Annual Benefit, in cooperation with staff, board, and committee members.

GALLERY OPERATIONS

o Manage gallery operations with other staff members and interns, including maintenance, lighting, and cleaning.

o Manage gallery tools, materials, and tech & office tech, including careful storage and monitoring of equipment & components (projector bulbs, adapters, etc), keep track of licenses and software, provide tech checklists to artists.

o Coordinate scheduling of outside use of gallery, in cooperation with Gallery Rental Manager.

o Assume additional responsibilities as needed in a small office setting.

EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will have a well-developed sense of priorities and initiative; ability to work in the fast pace of a medium-sized nonprofit organization with discretion; creative problem solving capabilities; and strong interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and sensitivity to cultural differences. Attention to detail and the ability to multitask are vital, as is the ability to follow through with a variety of projects that require both immediate attention and ongoing care. The candidate will have experience in developing and maintaining community relationships so that they may act as an advocate and community organizer for the artists and their projects. Project management experience and an artsrelated background are preferred and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is necessary. The candidate must have an enthusiasm for supporting bold experimentation in the visual arts.
