All Is Leaf: Rocky Mountain High

An Art and Ecology Residency

Meet All Is Leaf… A roaming residency program featuring art retreats in very special spaces dedicated to fostering ecological consciousness within the creative practice through deep, meaningful engagement with the earth and others.

Found among the notes of the poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe is the claim:

“Everything is leaf.”

Through his fascination with plants and an in depth examination of their totality, noting the “morphology” of the natural world, he concluded that every part of a plant is leaf. On nature, Goethe wrote, “We live within her, yet are foreign to her. Conversing with us endlessly, she never divulges her secret… Nature is even the unnatural. Those who cannot see her everywhere do not see her clearly anywhere.”

All Is Leaf is now accepting submissions for The Rocky Mountain High Residency from August 19-26, 2019. All creative beings seeking dedicated time to contemplate land and earth and who desire participation in sustainable creative acts to change the world are encouraged to apply. If your work advocates awareness, innovation, or revolution towards a better relationship with our earth and each other, we want to hear from you. Stay in a traditional Log Cabin made of trees while making art and interacting with the beautiful Colorado landscape, flora, and fauna. This is a one-time residency experience, as All Is Leaf is a nomadic program looking to introduce artists to new ways of making and thinking concerning astute environmental consciousness. Each incarnation differs in location, geologic attributes, ecological focus, concept, and type of accommodation.

Rocky Mountain High:

The Rocky Mountains are notable for containing the highest peaks known to central North America. These earth monuments are products of dramatic energy exchanges and millions of years of elemental sculpting. These mountains are slow artists, and all the beings that live within them are their collaborators. They have been influencing and informing creative works for as long as humans have set eyes and feet on them. The thin air, altitude, and the buzzing flux of geologic forces lends itself to a particular type of altered state noted as a “Rocky Mountain High”. Altered states of consciousness through interaction with nature have always been embedded within the creative process. This residency is an opportunity to engage with all things natural, but also to open dialogue around this particular experience and its influence on the artistic process. The previous All Is Leaf program was housed in an Earthship, a dwelling made of earth… The Log Cabin space was chosen because it is made of trees. Sleeping and working within spaces built from our natural environment, and those which are utilized and processed responsibly influence our souls, as artists and as humans…bringing our bodies into these natural materials and bringing these materials into our bodies. This experience speaks to the concept of All Is Leaf, and to invite this spirit into the creative conversation is similar to the trees inviting us to shelter within them.

The Log home overlooks a large open meadow with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Moose and fox are often seen in the backyard (and fox on the deck) in the evening and early morning. The Hot tub is strategically located on the top level of the deck with amazing views of the surrounding mountains and stars. In the Summer months, the large back yard and meadow are great to play in and explore. A large fire pit is located in the middle of the back yard. There are amazing trails located approximately 1/2 mile away. In the winter these trails are used for X-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and fat tire biking. In the summer these trails are great for taking a family walk, or mountain bike ride. Winter Park is known for its great skiing but has much to offer year round. The grocery, pharmacy and liquor store are all located about 5 minutes away. The local ski, and bike rental store is even closer. Heading north of town will deliver you to the west entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park a place so enduring and special it needs no introduction.
