Shanghai Urban Space Art Season 2019 is pleased to launch an international open call for proposals for five public artworks.

Shanghai Urban Space Art Season (SUSAS) was initiated in 2015 as a biannual art festival to advance the process of transformation of Shanghai, promote its organic renewal, enhance its public spaces and innovative power, strengthen its competitiveness as a global city, and create an attractive showcase for the city.

In this commemorative year of the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, SUSAS 2019 will be held for two months from September 28 to November 30 to redevelop the 5.5-kilometer long Yangpu Waterfront through public art, enhance the aesthetic and cultural qualities of the riverside area, and communicate the charm of urban spaces of Shanghai to the world.

The theme of the upcoming SUSAS is “Encounter” . Shanghai is a city born of and from waters. The great Changjiang (Yangtse) River, the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek have witnessed how Shanghai evolved from a small fishing village to a modern metropolis in the course of a thousand years of human history. The city has developed through overlapping encounters between history and the world, the land and the rivers, the industrial and the commercial, the oriental and the western, art and life, and people and people. Now, the artistic promotion on the banks of the Huangpu River will bring about a new intersection of history and the world to Shanghai.

In order to fully regenerate the historical and industrial heritage of the waterfront areas, including factories and docks, SUSAS 2019 has invited Mr. Fram Kitagawa, known as a pioneer in regional revitalization through art for his successes in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and Setouchi Triennale, to serve as the artistic director. A joint team of Chinese and Japanese professionals has devoted itself to planning and executing the project. 20 permanent works by world-renowned artists as well as numerous temporary works by talented artists and designers of China and beyond will be created and installed at the site.

SUSAS 2019 is calling for proposals for five public artworks to be installed on its main stage at the Huangpu Riverside.

We look forward with great anticipation to receiving innovative ideas for Shanghai waterfront regeneration from across the world.
