Following the appointment of Melanie Keen as Director, Wellcome Collection, Iniva’s Board are looking to recruit a dynamic, inspirational and collaborative Artistic Director to further develop our creative and curatorial partnerships, to drive Iniva’s innovative programme to remain at the forefront of the fast-paced conversations about art, heritage and class, race and gender politics.

With Iniva’s relocation to John Islip Street, London, and the establishment of new relationships and partnerships, we need a visionary leader to take forward Iniva’s 25-year legacy as a pioneering organisation.

Founded in 1994, Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) is an evolving, radical visual arts organisation dedicated to developing an artistic programme that reflects on the social and political impact of globalisation. With the Stuart Hall Library acting as a critical and creative hub for our work, we collaborate with artists, curators, researchers and cultural producers to challenge conventional notions of diversity and difference. We engage a wide audience, particularly young people, in discourse and debate on issues surrounding the politics of race, class and gender.

Through our programme we work predominantly with British-born and British-based visual artists of African and Asian descent supporting them at different stages in their careers. We offer residencies, commission new work and promote existing practices enabling artistic ambition and development. By cultivating innovative thinking, we are committed to disseminating research across a wide cultural spectrum and geographical network. Our ambition is to build a greater body of knowledge around each of the artists with whom we work to ensure the legacy of their practices for future generations of researchers and audiences.

Iniva’s Artistic Director will be responsible for fulfilling our vision for Iniva, with the Stuart Hall Library at its heart, to create a world-class centre for research into contemporary art and culture that gives space to visual art which examines life through the complex lens of race, class and gender. To fulfil our vision, we remain committed to supporting and developing artistic and curatorial practice in many forms. In addition, the prospective candidate will demonstrate a commitment to working with children and young people in education and beyond as well as making connections across the generations.

Salary: 50,000 GBP per annum

Reporting to: Chair of the Board of Trustees

Hours of work: Full-time, Monday–Friday 9:30am–5:30pm. Occasional evening and weekend work plus travel will be required in carrying out the responsibilities of the role.
