Presidential Libraries are not libraries in the usual sense. They are a combination of cenotaphs, temples, patriotic archives, sentimental museums and tourist destinations. They shape public memory and promote an understanding of the presidency preserving vast archives and documents of the history of America and the stories of its people.

The Presidential Library system formally began in 1939, when President Franklin Roosevelt donated his personal and Presidential papers to the Federal Government. The system is comprised of 15 Presidential Libraries documenting Presidents Herbert Hoover through Donald J. Trump (in process).
