The Department of Visual Arts and Art History in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in African Art and Visual Culture at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

This opportunity is open to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent (for example Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe). Recognizing the underrepresentation of Black faculty, this opportunity is to support the University’s Affirmative Action program and has been developed based on the special program provisions of the Ontario Human Rights Code. The position is part of a cohort hire of new colleagues at York University, including hires across a number of faculties and a wide range of areas and fields. A PhD in Visual Arts or a related area or PhD equivalent, such as an MA or MFA and a substantial record of professional experience, with a focus on African art and visual culture is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research and specialization in any region of Africa or the African Diaspora, and any time period, including the contemporary moment. Expertise in museum/curatorial studies would be considered an asset given the importance of African art within museum/curatorial studies.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and as appropriate, externally funded research or research creation at the highest level.
Evidence of or the promise of internationally recognized research excellence may be demonstrated through: the research statement; substantial record of recent professional experience; a record of reviewed publications (or forthcoming publications); presentations at major conferences and/or artistic venues; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.

The successful candidate will be able to teach a range of courses from an introductory survey of African Art through to advanced lecture and seminar courses in their areas of expertise, including those at the graduate level. This scholar would provide instruction in historical and contemporary African art, including colonial and postcolonial representations in the arts and visual cultures of Africa.

It is expected that the successful candidate will strengthen connections with the African Studies Program at York, with other departments in the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design, and with the wider community.

The Department of Visual Arts and Art History in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Expanded Drawing Practices at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD or PhD equivalent such as an MFA with a substantial record of professional experience, with a focus on drawing and an emphasis on non-traditional drawing practices is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research creation and specialize in contemporary drawing practices, including but not limited to, digital techniques and processes, traditional and evolving animation, drawing installation, street art practices, and all other forms of non-traditional mark making. It is intended that this position revitalize the VAAH’s Drawing program by developing curriculum that has a digital presence and addressing contemporary concerns of representation through socially engaged research and teaching practices. The position involves undergraduate teaching for majors and non-majors, TA supervision, studio and lecture courses including on-line course delivery. It is expected that the successful candidate will undertake the development and implementation of blended drawing courses that utilize both in-class and online instruction. It is expected the successful candidate will participate in administrative duties and responsibilities such as departmental governance and committee work. A minimum of two years post-secondary teaching is required. Candidates with a diverse range of teaching and research experience are encouraged to apply.
