The Performance Arcade 2023 - Call For Proposals

The Performance Arcade announces its open call to artists from around the world for its 2023 programme of works, open 16th - 26th February 2023. This annual exhibition and festival programme of events is located on Wellington Waterfront, New Zealand, with eleven years of presentation from 2011-2022.

Our hybrid gallery/stage architecture is made from an assembly of shipping containers that create a series of spaces for installation, performance art, sonic art, interactive media, video-art, forums, theatre, dance, and live music. Opening onto the bustling Wellington Waterfront, these sites of encounter engage the public in contemporary art and performance practices outside the familiar constraints of gallery or theatre spaces, experienced by 60-90,000 people each year.

Key developments for our 2023 programme include:

Defining Māori curatorial frameworks, roles, and tikanga for the event, and for performance art generally
A range of performance platforms and programmes for artists to choose from
Up to NZ$5000 available to fund each selected works

Artists/groups can apply to present works in the following sections:

Container Series (works located inside a shipping container, for one of the following)

Session 1 (16-19 Feb)

Session 2 (23-26 Feb)

Both Sessions (16-26 Feb)

Live Lab (A container hosting works for one day or shorter durations)

Live Music Series (a full programme of live music running from afternoon to evening 16-26 Feb, with the 'PA2023 Unplugged' weekend 11-12 February)

Video Series (audio visual works installed on screens or projected within the Arcade site)

Small Screens (will be installed within the Arcade architecture on LED/flat screen TVs)

Projection Wall (a larger container wall, projection surface, or building close to the site)

Waterfront and City Series (works that are performed or installed along Wellington Waterfront or in the city, not relying on a shipping container)

Outdoor Stage Series (works for a seated/gathered audience on one of our three stage spaces)

Main Stage (a container stage next to the bar fitted with full audio system and stage lighting)

The Ramp (a large sloped surface below Te Papa that is a good space for larger scale performance/spectacles - options to include projections in evening performances)

The Lagoon Stage (a smaller wooden stage 50m from the PA site with a lagoon backdrop. Ideal for quieter works that need space from the rest of the programme.
