The National Museum is the largest art gallery in the Nordic region, with responsibility for developing, managing, researching, exhibiting and promoting Norway’s most extensive collection of art, architecture and design. More than one million people have already visited the new National Museum since its opening last summer. With the current director’s term coming to an end on June 1, 2023, the museum is now looking for a successor to continue the work of making art available to everyone and developing Oslo and Norway as a destination for artistic and cultural experiences.

The director will be expected to develop the museum and its ambitions for working with the general public, as well as exhibitions, research and in-house earnings. The National Museum must be a driving force for art museums in general, have a strong voice in the cultural sphere, and be an attractive collaboration partner and exhibition arena both nationally and internationally.

We are looking for candidates who are able to present solid leadership results from the culture sector, preferably within complex organisations. The new director will have strong professional expertise that is relevant to the National Museum’s social mission. Particular importance will be placed on personal suitability.

The position is for a six-year term, though with the possibility of extension beyond this period.

Should you have any questions, please contact Mona Wille at Visindi at mona.wille@visindi.no, or Tonje Støver Knutsen at tonje.knutsen@visindi.no.

Applications accompanied by a CV are requested through this link as soon as possible and no later than April 17, 2023: https://visindi.no/en/application/13820

All applications will be treated in strict confidence, also with respect to the principal during an initial phase, if required. The National Museum is subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act concerning the right of access to lists of applicants. Applicants must provide justification for any request for exemption. If an exemption is not accepted, the applicant will be notified and, if necessary, be given the opportunity to withdraw their application.

The National Museum of Art, Design and Architecture is a Norwegian public museum that was established as a foundation in 2003 as the result of a merger between the Museum of Architecture, the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, the Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Gallery and National Touring Exhibitions. The National Museum has responsibility for developing, managing, researching, exhibiting and promoting Norway’s largest collection of art, architecture and design. The National Museum has about 350 employees who, in June 2022, moved into a modern, new building in Oslo with a floor space of 54,600 square metres.
