India film festival seeking film submissions from around the world (deadline December 31)

Filmmakers from around the world are encouraged to submit short films and documentaries to an international film competition being held in Jaipur, India. Deadline: December 31.

The Jaipur International Film Festival will be judging films in two categories: short films, not exceeding 15 minutes, and documentaries, not exceeding 30 minutes.

Submissions must have been shot between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2009. If a film is in a language other than English or Hindi, English subtitles are required.

The Festival will designate a judging panel who will issue final decisions. Prizes and certificates will be awarded to directors and producers of winning submissions.

Turkish film competition welcomes documentaries from around the world (deadline February 5)

The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation invites documentary films to a competition that will award both national and international documentary submissions. Deadline: February 5, 2010.

The International Documentary Film Competition aims to support both amateur and professional documentary film-makers.

In the national category, amateur entries should be a minimum of 15 minutes while professional entries should be at least 20 minutes. Films in this category should be in Turkish.

For international participants, entries should be a minimum of 25 minutes, and should be subtitled or dubbed in English.

Winners will be announced on March 19, 2010.

Film festival highlighting human rights invites entries (deadline December 10)

International human rights group Human Rights Watch is inviting filmmakers to submit works on human rights. Deadline: December 10.

According to the Human Rights Watch Web site, the International Film Festival has become a leading venue for distinguished fiction, documentary and animated films and videos with a distinctive human rights theme.

Selected films will be screened at a film festival in London from March 17 to 26, 2010 and in New York from June 10 to 24, 2010.

Photos sought that capture change in Eastern Europe (deadline December 13)

Photographers in Eastern Europe are encouraged to submit photographs that capture changes over the past 20 years in Central and Eastern Europe, to a competition under the theme "20 Years after the Fall of the Iron Curtain." Deadline: December 13.

Photos are being accepted in four categories: Everyday life; Landscapes and Cityscapes; Democracy and Politics; and Industry and Economy.

The competition is open to people of all ages. Each applicant may submit up to four photographs, but no entrant can win more than one prize.

The Big Read solicits community reads!

The Big Read is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to conduct month-long, community-wide reads between September 2010 and June 2011. The Big Read is a national program designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read will receive a grant ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, access to online training resources, educational and promotional materials, inclusion of your organization and activities on The Big Read Web site, and the prestige of participating in a highly visible national program. Approximately 75 organizations from across the country will be selected by a panel of experts.

2010 African American Heritage Month Calendar - Call for Artists (deadline December 11)

The Department of Cultural Affairs is a proud supporter of Los Angeles' 2010 African American Heritage Celebration, which will officially begin on January 29, 2010, to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. This celebration will promote and encourage an awareness of the significant contributions made by our City's African Americans in culture, education, politics, business, technology, and the arts.

As part of this celebration, our Department is creating a comprehensive calendar that will list the numerous events, exhibitions, lectures, and festivals related to this annual celebration of African American culture.

We invite visual artists to submit images of artwork for consideration to be part of the 2010 African American Calendar.
