PT Job Opportunity: Assistant to Museum Registrar

The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), located in downtown Long Beach, is searching for a part time Assistant to the Museum's Registrar. This is a great opportunity for an individual who is looking for hands-on experience in collections and gallery management area of the museum. This part time position offers 24-28 hours per week.

Essential Functions:
• Assist with the movement and storage of art in galleries and storage areas, with proper art handling and packing procedures.
• Assist in the transport, shipping and receiving of art objects. Will be responsible for communications with museums and art galleries in Latin America.
• Assist with opening crates and soft-pack art deliveries and prepare art for temporary exhibits and document new acquisitions.
• Practice museum standards to catalog/register and photo-document the art with collection management methods.
• Process condition reports and assess conservation needs for the art.
• Arrange and assist with the professional photography of art for image database, catalogs and publications.
• Assist in assessing framing needs of the art: preparation, packing, delivery and receipt.
• Assist in the inventory of art objects, organize documents, create and manage archives for each.
• Assist with data entry for art location tracking and additions/changes to the permanent collection and holdings on the collection database programs -- Excel and Embark Collection Management software programs.
• Assess clerical and art packing supply needs, and process supply orders.
• As needed, assist in the installation of exhibits: preparing walls and pedestals for installation of art (basic painting, spackling and sanding), assist in installing audio-visual equipment, hanging artwork with the application of industry standards, assist in setting lighting, assist with the installation of labels, text panels and title walls, assist in all aspects of set-up and clean-up.
• Participate in special projects such as the Annual Art Auction and Gala Events and attend some evening and weekend events related to the Curatorial Affairs Exhibition and Education programs.
• Supervise and train interns and volunteers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge /Skills/Experience Required:
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Power Point and Excel)
• Bilingual in Spanish/English required. Must be able to converse fluently and write proficiently in Spanish.
• Ability to use a digital camera; having basic knowledge of digital download photo-manipulation programs
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented environment
• Strong interpersonal communication skills
• Must be organized and detail-oriented
